Active travel is about making every day journeys healthier, safer and more sustainable by choosing to walk, wheel or cycle wherever possible.
Whether travelling to school, work or around the local community, active travel helps people build physical activity into their daily lives while reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality and lowering carbon emissions. It also plays an important role in creating safer, more connected neighbourhoods where people can travel confidently and independently.
At Nine Yards, we are committed to helping more people develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to travel actively.
Through nationally recognised Bikeability training and practical pedestrian safety education, we work with schools across the Tees Valley to equip children with the skills they need to make safe, informed decisions when travelling on or near our roads.
By encouraging active travel from an early age, we are helping to support healthier lifestyles, safer communities and a more sustainable future for everyone.
Bikeability
Our Active Travel Team – Dan Gill, Rachael Proud, Ian Lowson, and Connor Mullan – deliver Bikeability training in primary schools across the Stockton districts. Bikeability is overseen by the Bikeability Trust, the Department for Transport’s flagship national cycle-training programme for children in England.
Bikeability is a practical, framework-driven programme designed to build both the skills and confidence children need to cycle safely. By encouraging cycling, it helps improve children’s health and contributes to reducing car-based carbon emissions.
The training covers all levels, from beginners to more confident riders. Key skills taught include:
- Safety checks on bikes
- Road awareness and communication with other road users
- Correct riding positions
- Rights of way and priorities
Our team are highly qualified instructors, certified by 1st 4 Sport with the Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training. In fact, our team were among the first in the country to achieve this qualification – a standard which is mandatory for teaching Bikeability.
Every day, our instructors deliver multiple Bikeability sessions in different schools. With several years of experience, they ensure training is delivered safely, effectively, and with the highest quality.

Pedestrian Training
One of the key focuses of our Active Travel team is that of Pedestrian Training, under the tenets of Stop, Look, Listen, Think. Pedestrian training is an essential part of young children’s lives: It teaches them how to respect the road and cross it safely. It teaches them how to properly monitor the road to check for a safe crossing, how to maintain their visibility so that drivers can see them and how to properly cross the road.
Our Active Travel team deliver pedestrian training sessions across the Tees Valley, and have been doing so for many years alongside Bikeability. As such, they are highly qualified leaders in delivering pedestrian training and help to teach children how to safely cross the road.
